Mauritius Research Council

The Mauritius Research Council (MRC) is a parastatal body, set up in May 1992 as an apex body to promote and coordinate Government's investment in research. The MRC acts as a central body to advise Government on Science and Technology issues and to influence the direction of technological innovation by funding research projects in areas of national priority and encouraging strategic partnerships. Our Vision is “To be the driving force behind research for national development” and our mission is "Promoting and pioneering research for sustainable development to enhance the quality of life of the people of Mauritius"

So far, around 250 research projects have been funded by the MRC, out of which some are still ongoing. These projects have required an investment of approximately US $ 3 millions in various fields. Basically, 9 key sectors of priority have been identified and these are based on the research needs in Mauritius as follows: Biomedical, Biotechnology, Energy and Energy Efficiency, Water Resources, Information and Communication Technology, Manufacturing Technology, Marine Resources, Land and Land Use, Science Education and Social/Economic. Four areas have been identified as priorities based on present needs. These are :

  1. Development of Ocean Technology and Marine Resources
  2. Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy
  3. Waste Management and Waste Recycling
  4. Biomedical and Biopharmaceutical Research based on indigenous resources

In the light of the above and to allow as wide contribution as possible we are inviting you to join us in this endeavour by registering and sharing your innovative ideas with us. As national priorities change with time, your ideas do not have to be confined solely to the above priority areas.
